Question 2006 GT transmission clunk

Hey all,

I have a manual 06 GT. I got tired of the clunk that the two piece stock driveshaft had and had heard that the aluminum one piece D.S. had many benefits. So I made the switch and installed the one piece with the direction of TacoBills thread. The aluminum drive shaft was awesome for about a month then progressivley over time the transmission developed a noticeable clunk much like that of the two piece stock D.S. When I release the clutch and it grabs, it feels like the clutch grabs all at once and I hear and feel a clunk. Even if I smoothly release the clutch this happens. Its the complete opposite of the smooth engagement of the clutch I had before. Im assuming that it would be the driveshaft since thats the only mod I have made to the drivetrain.

Is this a clutch gone bad? The driveshaft? Any suggestions or things you might have heard of that might be similiar I would like to hear about. I appreciate it. This situatio is concerning me a bit. Thanks!

If you thing the T3650 clunks bad, try driving the new 2011's with MT82! That bastard clunks bad and loud, even with stock 2pc DS. For me, I get a particularly loud clunk going from 2nd to 3rd gear, and that is only at moderate gas, not spirited driving where I am releasing the clutch much more quickly.

By your description, I am thinking that it might be your clutch. I stress that this is only my guess; I am not a professional mechanic or shop worker.
You clutch might be grabbing to instantaneously instead of gradually engaging even when you are riding the friction point.

I don't know, but maybe going dual disc clutch might smooth that rapid fast engagement?

Well that's kind of what I was hoping some people would say. I like the one piece so Im going to attack the clutch. My stang only has 40,000 miles on it so I'm going to start at the dealer and see if they'll back it up. I got the car certified at about 10,000 miles so maybe they will not laugh at me too bad and do something about the clutch. Though thats probably one of those things that are "wear" items that arent protected by the warranty I'm guessing.

If anyone has any experience in dealing with dealers on the powertrain warranty please chime in. Thanks!

I wouldn't go swapping that clutch just yet. I see you have aftermarket control arms. Any other aftermarket suspension parts back there?

What makes you think it's the trans? Try pulling on the driveshaft fore and aft, up and down. Any play in it?

I will try that with the driveshaft test tomorrow. Do driveshafts come loose after installation. I sure torqued those down good. Or are you thinking there might be something wrong with the driveshaft it self? If its a one piece design how much could go wrong with it? I see your line of thinking though.

I just have the BMR sway bar and the LCA's. The LCA's were slightly loose before and were creating a different kind of clunk that has now been fixed (good thinking though!!).

Thanks!!

They're a 'one-piece' with a slip joint and two u-joints at each end. Beleive me, there's a lot of things that can go wrong with these driveshafts. Mine developed play in the slip joint after 3 years requiring replacement and I believe with age they will ALL develop play in the slipjoint. Not saying yours has a problem (yet) since it's new but where I was heading with the pull/push question will verify if there is any play in the slipjoint, u joints, pinion or transmission output shaft. They can all develop problems. I just find it hard to believe your clutch has problems with so few miles on it but you never know....

The other thing I was wondering is whether you had an aftermarket UCA because they are notorious for clunking due to the bracket -> bolt sizing. A few companies (steeda/UMI) make spacers to take out the slop.

Your car looks pretty low now that I look at it. Like eibach sportlines or something. How did you adjust your pinion angle? Pinion angle is really important with a one-piece driveshaft.
