Question 2005 Mustang GT (manual) Possible gearbox issue

My husband has a 2005 mustang gt, 5 speed. He has not had any problems with it until this morning. He shifted into neutral at a redlight this morning and once he got completely stopped something popped real loud toward the backend of the car. The car wouldn't move. Not even in neutral. There was smoke and grease all over everything toward the rear end of the car. My question is this.. could this be the gearbox? He's getting it towed home as I am posting this. He said he is going to take the gearbox off once he gets home to try to find out more. If you have any information it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!!

If the sound really came from the back of the car then I would say not the gearbox because the tranny is located up front, behind the engine...
