trade '10 GT for '12 GT?
Last October, I bought a '10 GT Premium, auto, 19” wheels. Obviously, the '11 5.0s were on the lot, but I got a heck of a deal on the '10 w/ incentives so it was too good to pass up. Now Edmonds says its worth more on dealer trade than I paid for it.
So I'm getting some 5.0 envy.
Stang's use:
- currently has ~ 1600 miles
- fair weather daily driver (so spent the SD winter in the garage)
- some road course driving (plan to hit Mid America Motoplex by Omaha), autocross, maybe NASA HPDE, and a few drag strips
I’ve looked up car magazine and forum post drag strip results, and was surprised the 5.0 was only about .5 second and 10 mph faster at the 1/4 mile on non-moded vehicles.
After learning about autocross and road course driving, good brakes can actually be more useful than lots of power. So part of me is saying keep this car and make sure the brakes/brake lines/fluid are good, do a CAI/tune, and maybe eventually some minor handling mods, and possibly replace the 19” wheels to give me more options in 18”.
One other thing--my ’10 was my military retirement present to myself because I picked it up 4 days before I retired, so its got a little sentimental value to it also.
So, if I buy a 5.0, will I really see a difference from my ’10 on a road course or autocross? I’m pretty sure driving 15 miles down the Interstate to work every day will feel about the same.
Opinions appreciated.

If you can and money is no object I say go for it. For autocross the 4.6L will serve you well but the Coyote will five you an advantage in getting to speed out of corners and all. None the less the Coyote S197 and the 4.6 S197 can be both modified got road course just about equally

A half second and 10 mph at the quarter mile is a significant difference. You should go drive a 5.0 first, then check if you can really get that much on the trade in (online figures are estimates at best, get the real deal).
Also, the 2011+ GT's have 6 speed transmissions compared to the 5 speed in your car. Might be more helpful on a road course...
If you are happy with your car, then hang on to it...but you should go test drive a new 2012 GT though.

but i think if you really can get more for it than you paid, i say you might as well. i guess it all depends on the difference though. several thousand dollars towards mods could do wonders
the terlingua would be a pretty fun road course car though

Wait for 2015 GT, imo
But you ask yourself what your motivation in switching is. If it's just "5.0 envy," go for it if you got the dough.
If you wait and get the 2015MY 50th anniversary GT, you'd be in a situation where you feel the 5.0 owners are in.
