Determining axle ratio by VIN
#11
a dealer might be able to look it up, but that still doesn't garantee it was never changed, unless OP is the original owner (but I guess he should know then what it had in the first place)
Just saying the question was does anyone know how to get the axle ratio from the vin, I was just saying who would know how to.

I'm aware of that, I'm also aware of our own database here at chrysler that I can pull up every sales code for any VIN of the past 10? years. I know ford would have the same system, just need a dealer or employee to look it up for you.
You could to it the old fasioned way and prop the back end up, mark your axle and driveshaft and turn the wheels and figure out the turn ratio. Seeing as how common it is to swap rear axles on our cars, I wouldn't even necessarily trust a sticker.

If you have a manual, RPMs at a given speed in 6th gear (or 5th for the '10/-s) is a pretty good indicator.

But I think you'd get better results being one or possibly two gears lower, because you'd have better resolution as far as the tach reading is concerned.

oooorrrrr, you could lay on your back in the garage for 9.4 seconds and read the tag on the axle housing....If you arent the original owner, well, that tag could be wrong, but you could do the ol' mark drive shaft axle count game.

1. Axle tag.
2. Door jamb sticker code.
3. Jack her up and spin the driveshaft.
Count driveshft turns to wheel turns and do the math?
4. Open her up and count the ring gear teeth as
well as the pinion teeth and do the math.

How about using one of the speed vs. RPM spreadsheets for the 4.6L S197 and a GPS? Once you know your true speed (via the GPS), just plug all the parameters into the spreadsheet. The only unknown is the gear ratio. At least it'll get you close if not dead-on.
