pretty much what they said check the power steering pump. your not supposed to have the steering on either side pegged for more than a few seconds. its fine if your making a sharp turn or doing parking lot manuevers. that shouldn't hurt anything. but holding it pegged for an extended period ie: like when you were doing doughnuts will damage the power steering pump.

I want to say I've seen steering racks in the $400-$600 range! Hope you get the issue resolve though.

Is there a fortified (beefed up) aftermarket steering pump that will not get damaged from extended periods of max wheel angle?

I sure don't want this to happen to me; though I have not done anything like this (yet).
