Default Colorado Driving Advice

So.... I'm living in California, but getting married in Colorado. As part of the wedding planning, this Xmas, the fiance and I are going to Colorado to do tastings, hair stuff, and god knows what else lol. Only problem is, we're taking the mustang! I'm a little hesitant because I've never driven the 'stang in a real winter (only Cali winters!)... but I have driven other cars through Colorado....

So the question is: Any advice for driving the mustang in winter/colorado? Anything short of dropping money on new tires? I mean, saving for this wedding, I cant just throw $1200 to slap on some winter tires...for a 4 day roadtrip lol

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

If you're not putting winter rubber on, then add about 150-200 #'s in the trunk and hold on for dear life. I suspect that any bad weather will result in an immediate response from the road crews and then all you have to worry about is your Mustang becoming a Rustang.

Maybe think about taking a plane or train to Colorado and renting a car there. A car rented in Colorado in the winter would likely be equipped for snow better than what you would find in California. Perhaps 4WD or AWD and a vehicle on which chains would fit.

My advice is coming from having been born and raised in Colorado.

I got my Mustang because I knew I was going OUT OF STATE for college. As in San Diego. If I had stayed, I would have kept my explorer.

Fact is if its a long road trip from cali from the north accross I80 or south accross I70 at that time of year it is almost a guarantee you will hit some storm. Colorado winters are downright dangerous in a SUV w 4wd, let alone a Mustang, especially if you have to go over the Rockies.

Dont take the Mustang mate. Especially with no experience driving in ****. If you do be prepared to send it home on a wrecker

Where in Colorado? There really are 2 parts of the state. When I lived in Longmont (Plains) normally you could wait a couple hours after they plowed and get around just fine, when I was living in Estes Park (Mountains) my 79 Bronco was double chained front and rear to get around and sometimes that was not enough.

I don't know where in California you are coming out of, but coming through Denver you will be on I-70, you almost need to worry about the Utah mountains over the Colorado mountains, but both ranges you would be crossing if it is snowing would require chains.
Unless you could go down on I-40, going through Flagstaff is a little easier and the actual snow zone on I-40 is much smaller than I-70.
Flying and renting in Denver is still the easiest.
