PCM died at 37k mi
I posted a while back about losing coolant through the overflow cap and not being able to track down the cause. Turns out it was the PCM not telling the fan to turn on. It needed to be replaced and luckily it was covered by an 8 year warranty.
Without the warranty, i'd have been kinda screwed...
When i asked about it going so fast, the reply i got was 'it's an electronic part. it's like a lightbulb where you can just turn it on one day and it pops'.
seriously? a $1000 light bulb?
Anyone else have a problem like this? Any chance this could be caused by a PIE? Mechanic's error (i've had a history with a terrible dealership service center...)?
I love the car but damn...

I'm no expert but...
I'm surprised that the only thing that was non-fucntional due to a defective PCM would be the ability of the fan to function properly. I'd bet they never touched the PCM and that it was some $5 relay and they ended up charging for the PCM under warranty. But I'm just a suspicious kind of guy anyway.

I've seen an older Ford PCM fail like that, but only when it (and the temperature) got hot: it wouldn't activate the fan at all.
But yeah, I'd be skeptical, too. That'd be a rare failure indeed, especially if no other issues. But, the high-speed fan should come on, too.
Keep an eye open for the issue to return at some point. Hopefully that fixed your problem, though!

seems fine since. before the replacement, the fan worked fine if the ac was turned on but other than that... not so much.
it's definitely not the same unit. not unless they cleaned it spotless.
no chance a pie adapter could have caused it? or maybe adding an aftermarket grille with gt 'fogs'? i can't think of anything else that was done to the electrical system. having a hard time wrapping my brain around the unit just randomly developing a problem like that at low miles.
either way, thanks. i appreciate the replies.
