$5k more for a GT worth it?

The 5.0 is the easy choice. No questions about it. I feel like I was in the same boat as you, except I knew I didn't even need over 300HP at all.
I went in thinking lets go V6, plenty of power and reasonably affordable. Took a ride in a red candy V6 that just showed up on the lot and it was fun, but it wasn't anything that made my face crack with a giant evil grin. The sound wasn't there and without that thicker torque curve, it felt like the engine was spinning hard but the power just wasn't being realized. I took a test drive in a 10 GT on the lot and it was a completely different story. Felt fast, felt aggressive, felt angry. I knew there and then that sense was going out the window and I needed to consider the V8.
To me, buying a muscle car is something that simply can't be looked at through the eyes of logic, but through the senses. It's truly that feeling you get in each car that should make or break the purchase when you're buying a car not for transportation but for at least partial enjoyment. I forked over the extra cash when it came down to my purchase because I knew I'd regret not having that roaring V8, massive torque, stupid amounts of power, etc.
I drove both and there was no comparison between the V6 and V8 to me. Money caused me to spend the time thinking, but when you're already spending a lot, you need to get what's right for you, not make a decision you could easily regret.

I have my '07 GT and the g/f's '06 Pony. When I drive her car after driving my GT, it feels like I'm driving a bumper car at the amusement park. Yep, it's fun but...

I had a an '07 GT/CS until December of last year when I traded it in for an '11 Edge Sport. Literally, one of the biggest mistakes of my life. Briefly thought about looking for a new V6, but Thursday I brought home a 2012 GT and I couldn't be happier. Get the GT, you will not regret it.
