Default changing custom tune ?

ok this maybe a stupid question. but here goes>>>

im leaving on a 700mile road trip today and want to get the best gas mileage avaliable. should i load my Bama 87 octane tune or just run my 93? also do i have to return it to stock before i load the 87 or can i just go from 93 to 87.
SCT SF3 is already loaded with 87 91 93 octane tunes.

quick replies appreciated. i leave at 12pm texas time.

No you dont need to switch to stock tune before swapping tunes.

I'd run the 87 tune myself on a long road trip but bear in mind, if you have 93 octane fuel in the car, you are fine to run the 87 tune. But if you have 87 octane in the car, do NOT run the 93 tune.

Thanks Franchi, my car is almost empty so i figured i would swap tunes before i filled up with 87. then swap back when i get to Nashville so i can throw an old friend back in the seat ;P .... how much power difference are we talking between 87-93?

Not a ton but enough that I could notice it. Also another good reason to run 87 is that depending on where you are going, not every place has 93 octane.

You will save gas if you load the 87 and use that grade gas on the trip of course.
87 costs quite a bit less than 93. Not a whole lot better gas mi. BUT will save gas MONEY.

Most places here have 89 then 91 and then when you get to the big city they have
87 and 93 instead.

Im gonna repeat in essence what Franchi said because it is SO IMPORTANT!

I would load a low octane tune just in case the area you are in when you fill up does not carry up to 93 octane. If you have a 93 octane tune and there is only 91 octane gas you could be in trouble. It is NOT good to run a lower octane gas than your car is tuned for. That spells TROUBLE.
Also.. always take your tuner with you on long road trips just in case you run into this problem so you can load a lower octane tune.

Running 93 or 91 gas with a 87 or 89 octane tune is fine. But running a lower octane gasoline than your car is tuned for damages the engine!

I take long trips with my Stang and I run the 89 tune 99.9 % of the time. For the sake of the few dollars over the course of a 700 trip, I don't bother. The only time I loaded the 87 was because that was all I could get in the middle of BumFuk late at night. Also, I doubt you'll see much difference in gas mileage either but let us know if you do.

And now that I've rambled about it, I have a 650+ mile trip coming up the end of next week and may "tinker" with my tunes just for poops and giggles...

I have a mere 300 trip here Im leaving on Thursday am going to Woodward in MI but that will be the longest trip I've taken in the 06 GT so curious to see what my freeway mpg is like. City, I get consistent 10 to 12.5 mpg.

So much depends on how your car is setup and cruising engine speed. If you can cruise at 1500-1600 RPM (which I've done a few times, pump-to-pump, biting my lip at 55-60 MPH with my 3.55's) I can get ~27 MPG hand calculated. Crank that up to 2000 RPM and it rolls off to about 24 MPG. Bump that up to about 2200-2300 RPM steady cruise and I'm lucky to see 21-22 MPG.

Yeah, with my 4.10 gears I am at 2200 rpms at steady 70. But then the Thumpr Cams dont help much either. lol Either way, it will be the best MPG I'll have gotten out of the car in 3 years.

I keep track of the mpg on all my cars on www.fuelly.com and everytime somebody updates their car with a new fuel up, the site lists it to everybody on right hand side. Usually see the following which cracks me up.

Jackson just fueled his 94 Suzuki Samari = 26.43 MPG
Helen just fueled her 06 Honda Civic = 31.43 MPG
Deron just fueled his 09 Prius for best ever tank of = 44.56 MPG
Franchi just fueled his 06 Mustang = 10.32 MPG

Most people track their to see how high they can get it, I track the 06 to see how low I can get it. lol Well, and cost analysis over time helps too. Currently the 06 costs .35 cents a mile as opposed to the Sable ( which gets the best MPG so far out of the 4 ) which costs .14 cents a mile

I remember after our cams, long tubes, and gears we took a hit on MPG as well lol.
But dayum it was so fun having those mods, the sound, the increase in UMMPHH, and the awesome shaking of the cams there's no way I would have traded it for the MPG!
