Progressive (my insurer) has been advertising something called "Snapshot". It appears to be a device that plugs into your diagnostic port and monitors how you drive. They say "the better you drive, the more you save." It's not hard to see where this may lead....
Surcharge for "bad driving".
Refusing coverage if you won't use the device.
We already pay higher rates because of what we drive. I don't want big brother in my car. What do you guys think?

Once they get people to install the thing, what's to keep them from changing the rules. If they can convince NHTSA that it's a safety thing, they might even convince DMV's to require them. The technology always comes first, then it gets misused (like red-light cameras).

Not to be paranoid, but new world order here we come. Do they have to be watching us at all times! Back the f up, and let me keep my freedom. Now that being said, can I order one for my son when he turns sixteen.

If you are in the military and not using USAA you need to switch, just wanted to throw that out there.
Anyway, I see this leading to more companies doing this. Can you unplug it if you take it to the track or something? I really hope this doesn't become the standard. Not that I go crazy and drive like an a** all the time but I just don't like big brother watching me.
