Wet Sanding

Wet Sanding
Hey Guys,
What is the point of wet sanding? Is it for cars with really bad clear coats or should everyone do this once and then just maintain the wax?
Also, when you wet sand, are you removing all of the clearcoat?
Thanks.

wet sanding is to remove deep scratches...you don't remove all of the clearcoat, but you do remove more than if you were polishing with a rotary...wet sanding is surely for people that know what they are doing, if you feel iffy about it, practice on a scrap part...you can do SERIOUS damage to your paint

wet sanding with 1000 or 2000 grit sand paper will give a super smooth finish. As mentioned above it blends in the deep scratches. Make sure you sand in one direction and use plenty of water and don't cut through....takes lots of practice to get the technique down. Follow up with wax by hand or buffer and you could have a mirror finish.

If you only have swirls you absolutely shouldn't wet sand...you're risking major damage over nothing by doing that.
Use a dual action or rotary buffer instead with a polish on and do a good job, and your swirls will be gone, and you won't have to worry about eating through your clear.

Yes and no. My brother sideswiped a tree last year so about half of the car has been repainted. Within the last year. But I have always used microfiber towels when drying and microfiber hand mit when washing. But I still see swirls and it doesn't look as good as it does in the pictures.
