Gas Mileage in an 07 GT?
I traded my lovely Mazda 6i in yesterday for this even lovelier 07 GT. I am absolutely loving this car. Problem is, the notation is that I get 17mpg. However, between yesterday and today, I've driven 140 miles and am already very close to the last quarter of the tank.
Is it going to stay like that...or is it just trying to adjust to my lead foot?
Also, I'm assuming it's best to drive these cars slower to increase your MPGs?
I'm having to relearn how to drive since doing so much with my 6i. In the 6i, I'd stick with 1st and 2nd gear until the speed limit, and then shift into 5th, and that actually got me a consistent 21mpg (over the advertised 18mpg). Driving like a grandma in that car actually dropped it to 17.
Just trying to get a feel for what I should and shouldn't be doing in regards to mpg with the GT specifically...

You will be getting about 17mpg which is normal and what it's rated at for city. Obviously the further you push down the pedal the more gas it uses. Highway is good for up to 25mpg. If it's not modified it will eat 87 octane without a problem, hope you were not expecting much better.

Gas mileage isn't something that you can compare too accurately. Two people with identical cars driving identical traffic patterns can get widely varying results. Throw in the crappy ethanol laced gas and how widely the ethanol content may vary from tank to tank and you have additional variance totally out of your control.
That being said, my '07 GT averages about 23 mpg highway at a steady 70 MPH, pump-to-pump and hand calculated. The typical on-baord reads about 1.5 MPG high but some are close to dead-on. I can squeeze 27 MPG, pump-to-pump if I run at about 55 MPH. Mixed driving 50/50 and I average about 18-20. My steady state highway numbers can vary by as much as 4 MPG going from straight fuel to ethanol-laced.

I shift at pretty low rpms (just about 2100) but get up to speed quickly and cruise. Like I'm in 5th before I hit 40 mph.
I get 20 mpg driving around town in a suburban area, 29 on the highway. And that's with romping on her every now and then
Depends a lot on your gear ratio, what you have done to it, how you drive, quality of gas...so many variables.

Not slower, just more thoughtfully. studies have shown that accelerating briskly to cruise speed (not WOT, just quicker) yields better mileage than accelerating like a glacier... other things like taking the slightly longer road with less lights help too.
