Default Help w/CEL light w/gas cap light

I apparently improperly tightened or have a defective fuel cap which has triggered the CEL light and the fuel cap off warning light.
I believe that if I tighten the cap properly, and the evaporative emissions system goes through a successful self-test, it will shut off the light. This, however will not help me to determine if I have a defective fuel cap. What can one do to clear the code/clear the light.
If cleared and the light does not reappear, I installed the cap improperly when I fueled up....if it returns, I can clear the lights once again and install another fuel cap.
Sound right???... Suggestions????

Remove and re-tighten the cap, then go to Oreillys or Autozone and clear the code. If it comes back, get a new cap...

Disconnecting the battery will clear everything else in your car. Not a big deal if you don't mind inputting your stereo presets and rough running for a few miles. Most of the FLAPs in my area quit clearing codes. Spend $70 and get a decent OBDII scanner and you can check the codes and clear them.

I had that happen to me. Code popped up, cleared it and hasn't come back. Sometimes it just gets spastic like that.

I haven't tried it yet, but won't our SCT Tuners read and clear codes such as this? I know it will read, but I haven't thrown any codes that needed clearing, but maybe someone here knows for sure.

Yes, I used my SCT tuner to clear the code.
