2006 GT is burning up alternators
#22
cool...yeah I live off Trickum near Lassiter High. figured the check engine was from motor running lean, think its an O2 sensor, maybe loose from when I put the straight pipes back in after taking out the cats. Now to figure out the alternator issue, gotta firgure out about testing the ground wire...nice Stang by the way, I have some engine mods, but not all that...

Wayne613 describes it above. An ammeter in series with either battery terminal.
The 05's and '06's were notorious for draining the battery with the sound system left on when you turn off the ignition. The amp continues to pull current. It was resolved (for the most part) in '07 but many S197 owners, regardless of what year, continue to have charging/starting system issues.
I'm not sure if 50mA is correct as I recall hearing that the parasitic draw was bit more but probably no more than 100mA. I recall a thread in which 157db mentioned a value and I'll be damned if I can remember.

Unless something has changed this is what the service manual itself states for the notes if you look on page 15. <50mA.
So long as no other LEDs or the like are being powered(on the cluster or after-market), this makes sense, as keeping time and presets is all the HU should be doing, and very minimal usage from the SJB.

I just had to replace the alternator on my 2006 4.0 - and I never turn the Shaker 500 off when I shut down, don't have any aftermarket stereo systems or anything
But I figure at 189,872 miles the alternator may have lived as long as I can expect. No problems up until Tuesday night this week and racking up that many miles on it.

to go into 'low current draw' 'sleep mode' before performing the
amperage draw test.
