In lieu of having my car randomly shut off on me in rush hour, on the San Francisco bay bridge while I was in the middle lane, I decided to do a little troubleshooting.
I decided that since I was going to change my oil, I might as well change my fuel filter, clean my MAF sensor, and clean my throttle body the same day. After all that, I decided to cut open the fuel filter to see how dirty it was. It was a pain to pry open, but here's a glimpse for anyone who's interested.
With fuel filters costing as little as they do, I don't understand why people don't manage to change them regularly. I don't want crap getting into my engine and fuel is some dirty stuff.

+1, I am starting to make a habit out of changing mine every 2 or so oil changes.
LOL +1, I didn't even notice it at first. I change mine pretty regularly, its amazing how much a simple fuel filter does for cars. What fuel filter did you use OP?
I guess Im the opposite. I rarely change fuel filters. Heck, my 01 explorer has only had it changed once and that was troubleshooting. Turns out my problem wasnt the filter but a leaky intake manifold gasket.
