ABS/TCS Lights come on after a burning smell...
Hi,
I have a 2006 Mustang GT and today I ran into a interesting problem. I had been driving (a little rough, enjoying my new SLP Loudmouths) and as I got home my ABS and TCS lights came one followed by a burning smell, then the lights went off and a "Check Charging System" warning came on.
I parked and turned it off as soon as I could and then opened the hood. Nothing seemed wrong so I waited a minute or two and started it. It was fine for about 30 seconds and then a weird noise from the engine bay started and the Check Charging System warning came back on.
I'm going into my dealer tomorrow, but I'm getting pretty worried about what it might be... I'm kind of hoping its just the alternator which would be a piece of cake for them to fix (and free as I'm still in warranty).
My car is pretty much stock, I started running 91 gas about 2 weeks ago, I have Royal Purple Oil/filter and the SLP Loudmouths I mentioned... which I installed yesterday -_-
Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Sounds like when my alternator went out - got a whiff of electrical burning smell in the morning on the way to work. On the way home, ABS lit up, followed by all the electrical starting to shut down.
I figure that 189,872 miles on the stock alternator wasn't bad.
If you are getting a noise as well, check your belt. Is the serpentine belt slipping, do you have a pulley hanging up and not turning?

If they have the alternator in stock it is only about a 10 minute job. When mine failed I towed the car home because I already had another alternator in the garage - popped the hood and in 15 minutes had the new alternator on and the charger on the battery and started it back up an hour later.

The charging systems on these S197's are mediocre at best. But I guess I need to ask; how can your '06 still be under warranty? Unless you paid that $1000 and some odd cash for the silly extended warranty (in which case you could have bought a 1/2 dozen or more alternators).
Also, why the 91 octane? Unless you're tuned for it, there's no power gain.
