Default Cleaning my headlight housing

Well last nice one of my hids seems to have shorted and filled my headlight housing with smoke. I pulled over after smelling something burning and then pulled the hid out and the ring that holds it in had started to melt too
Ill post pics later.

To topic. How do i clean the smokey hue out of my lenses. Does it require removing it from the car or can it be accomplished with it still on

<edit>I just got the time to actually get down and look at the damages caused. Is alot worse then I thought before...

it looks like the bulb just burst into flames inside the housing scorching and melting anything near it...is there any possibility of salvaging or just look at this to upgrade or what?
