Is it ok that a Ford dealer just changed the oil in my GT with 5W-50?

I think the real question is why do the 2013's spec 5w50? Maybe it has something to do with all the #8 cylinder failures I've read about.

What about all the super tight tolerances inside the motor, bwahahahahahhahaha!

I'd be ok if the car called for 20W and they used 30W but not any higher. If the OM states 20W or 30W, then I'd go back and have them change it. It was their error.

Make sure they put 5w50 on the invoice. I would have a talk with the service manager any way. Either way I would want the right oil in the car! Make them replace it!

1200 miles and a new oil change sounds premature but hey, why not right? 5-50 doesnt sound right and i would make double sure the job was performed correctly.
Since we're on the subject of oil changes, when should I perform my first oil change on a 2012 V6? I only have 1700 miles...

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow about it, I have a feeling that it's that it's going to be a hassle to get them to change it but it was an expensive oil change and they should stand behind it.

What I'm still trying to find out is whether or not the heavier weight oil could actually harm the engine, or if it will just affect fuel economy. The owner's guide says 'SAE 5W-20 oil provides optimum fuel economy and durability performance meeting all requirements for your vehicle's engine.'

It's probably not necessary, but I always like to change the break in oil after the first 1K. I should have just done it myself (and saved $$ in the process), but I was already at the dealer getting a tire repaired so while they were writing me up I just decided to have them do the oil change.

well IMO i suggest holding off on the complaints until you find out why ford is recommending 5w-50 in the 2013 5.0. if its ok for the 2013 5.0 then its also ok for the 2012 and 2011 5.0.

ford obviously changed this for a reason. it might be a good thing.

If Ford in fact does recommend 5w-50 in the 2013, then you are absolutely correct.

the boss uses 5w50 oil, id wager some part of the change has to do with the scarcity of the oil. you cant walk in to 99% of the parts places in town and find that oil. leaving the dealer as the option. id have them change that oil too op. it would probably be fine, but id only use what specs call for.
