Default 2012 5.0 vs 2012 camaro top speed

hey guys maybe someone can clear up something for me.
the 2012 5.0 @ 412 hp top speed is around 155mph &
the 2012 camaro @427 top speed is the same b'cuz they are limited, correct so far? removing the limiter from a camaro supposedly allows it to go 180mph.
would that be similar for the 5.0?
i was just curious. no envy here as i put a Roush 2300 on my 5.0 & frequently enjoy camaro's for a quick snack. but the engine technologies vary so much - i was just curious as to how that played out for top end speed. thanks for any comments

I don't think it horsepower or engine technologies are the only factors. I suppose it also depends on what gear ratio is used. I don't think the same one is available in both cars. Weight and drag coefficient are probably other factors that make an impact. I'm guessing you could even get a car with a n/a v6 to top out higher than a supercharged v8 depending on how the rest of the car is set up.

rikb53. I'm assuming if you feel your front facia/chin splitter is aggressive enough and a proven design for truly casting more air to the side and creating more down force at the same time as you progressively go faster. This combined with a rear spoiler that also is proven to create more down force and expels air efficiently from the rear of the car as you go faster.

Also a rear diffuser that is proven to channel air past the rear of the car as you go faster.

These three factors combined with your added power should result in a good deal higher "controllable" top speed. Between the Boss 302 and the new 2013 GT500, Ford has obviously solved a lot of air drag issues and produced substantial improvements for the front facia/chin splitter, rear spoiler and rear diffuser areas.

I don't know how that relates to your stock items on your 2012. The new 2012 options allow to get the functional rear diffuser that looks better than the previous plastic diaper of the 2010 models. Your rear spoiler should be of the most efficient GT500 type, so it would really be a matter of your front facia/chin splitter design being strong enough and substantial enough for stability beyond 155mph. Otherwise a Mustang is going to have stability control problems past 155mph no matter what power you have. Erik

both cars stock are limited to 155mph.

both cars with the lmiiter removed and otherwise stock are supposedly capable of 180s with a long enough/straight enough runway, but neither are designed for top speed. like eolson said, drag is going to be a problem and setting up the car to handle high speeds would be necessary.

if you are tuned you should be unlimited.. i still haven't had mine past 130mph, I just see no reason to go that fast. i had my 07 up to about 145 with a long straight flat empty road, haven't had the same conditions yet in my 2012 where i feel it's safe enough to try, and i'm not really interested in that anymore anyway.

I've been to 160 before, and it felt OK at that speed. I do have a tuner. I did not feel like going faster. And that was with 4 grown men in the car!

Interestingly, with the Brembo brakes, a max-effort stop will not deplete the brakes from 160 (even with 4 dudes in the car). They were still perfectly usable. I like them.

On the 5.0 mustang 5th gear is a 1:1 gear with only a single overdrive gear. I'm not sure of the gearing on the Cameros, but if they have 2 overdrive gears like the Corvette or GT500, then they would get to that theoretical top speed faster. Once you are over about 140-150, it's all about mechanical advantage and brute force.

thanks for the comments. never really had mine over 130 & that was by accident. this is houston & usually wall to wall cars - so my habits don't take me up to those speeds. i was curious after reading the 100's of mustang vs camaro threads and trying to understand better the differences between the two engines. Ford having the coyote for a couple of years or so now & chevy having their LS series (push-rod). when i got my 5.0 in dec '11 - i was torn between ford & chevy - but went mustang and haven't looked back yet. heck, mine is geared for gas mileage w/ 331 rear end.... but, plenty power for me. appreciate the insite guys. thanks
