Love my 2013 Mustang, but not the stereo
Have the base Shaker system w/ electronics navigation pkg.
Didn't consider the Shaker Pro since this car was already sitting on
the lot with pretty much everything I wanted, even spoiler delete.
My trade was a 2006 GT with the Shaker 500 and although the head unit would sometimes give me fits with the CDs I was always content with the overall sound quality.
I'm thinking a trip to the local audio specialist to have a subwoofer placed in the trunk might just give it that last little boost that it needs...

Before I picked up my '13, I test drove a '12 with the upgraded Shaker system w/ subwoofer. Sounded really good, but I didn't want to sacrifice the trunk space. Had a hell of a time to get a set of golf clubs in the back, which is more important to me, so I opted away from the upgraded system.

I have a similar thread. Loved my 07, but the 12 sucks. I replaced my door speakers and it helped, but have not found a good set of used speakers on ebay for the rears yet. I refuse to pay retail for a lot of stuff

I'm surprised to hear this. the Shaker system in my 2013 is sounds great! By far the best factory stereo I've ever had in a car. I'm also well versed in the aftermarket stereo world, and I honestly don't think I'll mess with this one. I will say however, that the audio source makes a huge difference. It sounds like crap on Sat radio and streaming bluetooth.

I have a shaker 1000 and while im sure it sounds better than stock its really not all that. Not for what Ford charges for it. I installed some low end Kicker components in my wifes car (12 in sub and 1000 watt amp) and it sounds as good as the shaker...only $350

subwoofer allll the way man!
Your best option with maximum trunk space is to get a sub that fits into a side trunk sub box specialized for your model mustang. It doesn't take up a whole lotta room, just one corner.
With a sub, you want an amplifier. And to make things easier, you can get one drilled on the backside of the back seats, inside the trunk.
I've had the same sub/amp combo in two of my cars and I can say it is simply amazing. I was very unsatisfied until I got this setup.
I also changed out the stock front door and rear speakers. The amp I had also could hook up to not only the sub but the rear speakers as well.
Overall, this did end up costing me 500 sum dollars but it was worth every damn cent.
The speakers and sub I got are in my sig.

I have the Shaker 1000 (had the shaker 500 in my 06 and 10 too) and the first thing I did was put my Focal speakers in. It made a huge difference. The day after I pulled them out of the 10 and swapped the factories back in, I was driving to work and had forgotten that I'd swapped them. I thought I'd blown the HU or the amp cuz it really just sounded like muffled dog crap. Then I remembered I was back to stock. lol
The sub on the Shaker 1000 I really like.
As for the HU, I plan on swapping it out at some point. I'm just getting stuck in analysis paralysis with what double din to go with...Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion?...too many choices.
I'd say get a sub installed and if that doesnt put your in a comfort range, swap in some quality speakers and that should definitely get you into the zone.
