Make sure you are emotionally detached from the car and the deal. Just be straight forward with them and know what you want to offer ... Also know the max $$ you would be happy with... I would probably max out around 24k with the limited options that it has.

Remember, These things are just hungs of metal/plastic* that we will eventually get rid of!

I went and looked at the car. The paint is in awesome condition. This car was garaged and not driven much.

I've been w/o a car payment for 3 years and I LOVE IT.

Mind you, I LOVE Mustangs, but buying a car is going to set me back $400 a month (i'm going in with $0 down, just my car for trade).

Can some of you share what you went in with to buy your car? How much did you put down? Did you use your car as trade? Did you get what you wanted for trade?

Thanks for all the advice. Love these forums!

I never trade! I put down 2500 cash. Financed the rest. Payment is 460 a month.

I guess I could go in with $3500 cash and then try and sell my car on my own.

It's a 02' Mercury V6 Couger sports package. 78k miles and in excellent condition. It will need tires and a wheel alignment soon.

NADA on my car for trade is $4k. I'll be lucky if a dealer will give me $3k for it. Selling that on my own, I bet I could get $4500-5k for it.

An extra $1500-2000 would be nice!

Food for thought!

put that thing on craigslist and sell it the dealer is probably going to offer you 2k and then play with the numbers so that you are giving it to them. Id just put down 2500 and get a new one. And sell the cougar and then after you pay on it a couple months you should have a fat wallet pay it off early : )

I was looking at new Mustangs recently and I couldn't find anything less than $32K out the door(strippo model, no sync, cloth seats, standard radio/CD player), but I wanted automatic(and I'm not very fond of the 2010-2013 cars....just not too crazy about them look-wise). For a leather equipped premium 2013 GT automatic, it was about $37K out the door(about $2500 off MSRP after taxes, etc). That was too rich for my taste, my 2006 GT was $465/mo with zero down & 0% ARP and I didn't another payment like that.
I did find a 2011 GT/CS(with 45,000 miles on it) red, automatic, but there was just something off about it....they were willing to take $23,500 out the door, but I walked away... found my 2009 GT with a glasstop, automatic, bluetooth, premium model, HIDs and 18" Bullitts with only 15,000 miles. Dealer was asking $27,995(I was in love with the car, but I'm not stupid, I've bought 6 cars at dealerships before, so I'm a little versed)
I took low Kelly Blue Book for car in the condition it was in to dealership, my credit union goes by bluebook for total price for financing purposes. 2009 GT in said condition was
$21,800(trade in price) and $26,700(retail price). I offered $22K out the door, was met with $24k out the door, we settled on $23K out the door. Car is in brand new condition.
I wanted a newish car with the least amount of miles for a decent price(I still have 2 years & 45,000 miles on the powertrain left). Yes, it isn't a 5.0L, but I'm not a speed freak and I love the original S197 much, much more. My payments are like $279/mo for 4 years, I put 50% down payment(a little more, I put $12K down). Do your homework, take every bit of info regarding the car you're looking at, carfax, KBB values and the guidelines of your creditor. Its a buyer's market for V-8 performance cars. I would say if you can walk away for $25K out the door(about $23000 sale price), job well done
Best of luck!

I bought a 11 premium GT in March of this year. (Tax season still)

Premium, hood scoop, 3.73, spoiler, leather, 5k miles, sync and a few other goodies. I paid 28,900. The motor blew, but that's what the selling price was. MSRP was 37XXX

I would offer 24K and settle with no more than 26k.

As others have stated....A new one would be almost as cheap if they do not budge. I seen a 12 brembo, premium today for 29k.
