Exclamation Why Wax Damages Matte Finishes. Important Info Inside!

Many people buy matte (a.k.a. flat) black stripes etc. and do not know that wax causes damage to matte black stripes and other matte finishes.

There is some confusion out there as to this being true.
Some say yes and some say no.
Most of us who own vehicles with matte black know this is true.
Whether through a bad experience, or from luckily hearing about it.

YES without a DOUBT this is 100% TRUE.
So if you hear from someone it is not true do not listen to them!
Some people find out the hard way.

It is hard to believe things many times though when you do not understand
WHY and HOW things work.

I am posting a link to a short article that explains how wax damages matte finishes so that everyone can read an understand WHY
matte finish is damaged by wax.

There are other products you can purchase to protect your matte black stripes that work great to protect the
vinyl and does NOT damage them like wax does. Some forms of Citric Spray cleaner can be used to clean matte on vinyl products.
And there are also products that PROTECT the matte finish vinyl.
One such product is 303 Aerospace Protectant.

There are also products for matte paint if you happen to own a vehicle that has been painted with
a matte finish.

Although the article talks about paint when it comes to wax damaging matte finish, the same thing happens
to other matte finishes, such as matte black stripes or other decals.
I hope it helps to settle any confusion any of you may have.

Happy reading!

No problem!

I am a HUGE fan of matte black stripes and we owned
a black 2006 GT with the same stripes as you before we traded in for the
GT500.
We did put 1/2" pinstripes on each side of the 10" stripes to add
a little accent leaving a 1/4" gap between the 10" and the pins.

Anyways.. again N.P. and happy to help!
Post pics when you get those stripes installed on your baby!

Can't you just hit the stripes with IPA and some vinyl protectant to restore them?
Wax turning matte finishes glossy seems pretty obvious.

I'm planning on doing matte black stripes on black in the near future.

IPA?
Not sure what that abbreviation is.
And before putting the vinyl protectant on I would definitely check to see
what is in it before applying it to the stripes.

The 303 Aerospace is what I used on our 06GT with matte black stripes.
It is used VERY WIDELY when it comes to matte black finishes, and all vinyl in general.
It works VERY well on both cleaning, AND protecting them.
A 32oz bottle will last you up to two years. You don't need to apply much
of it at ALL.

303 is EXCELLENT when it comes to protecting against everything you can
list when it comes to things that wear vinyl stripes down or make them loose their color characteristics. You should really check the stuff out.

As far as wax damaging the matte finish being obvious.
There are a lot of people who are not informed on just what chemicals etc. can harm finishes or
how chemicals, etc. work with them.

There are questions about this all the time on the forum and some people even question it being true or not.
Not only will it take the matte finish off... but it will not look like a finish that is gloss really.
It looks pretty much glossy BUT it looks really messed up.

AGAIN IT IS ABSOLUTELY 100% TRUE.
WAX WILL DAMAGE matte finish!

Same applies for the flat black trim pieces on the car? Window trim, mirrors, cowl, etc?

Eagle One Nano is a matt-safe product! A guy in our club uses it on his GT500 that has matt-Black stripes and it works no problem. Seen him do it MANY times at teh car shows! In the hot sun too!

Buy a piece of Matte Black Vinyl and try the wax on there and leave it in the sun.....see how it turns out! FWIW

Im sorry but I cannot agree.
Eagle One Nano IS a wax and unless it is just labeled as a wax and does not have your wax ingredients, over time it will damage the Matte finish.
If ANY thing labeled wax does not specifically say it is safe for using on matte finishes, then DO NOT use it.
I would not recommend using it even if it did just to be safe.

Leaving it the sun is NOT a sufficient test for the damage over time.
Read the article and you will find out why.

Edit: I just read Eagle One Nano has carnauba in it. Which is one of the prime things that damages matte finish over time.
The ingredients in it that cause such a great shine are the same ingredients that break down the imperfections and tiny dimples that
make matte look matte.
Sure it may look great and bead off water, but it is damaging the matte finish and with time the matte finish will be gone.
That is where people get confused.. they think "Hey it looks great so it works." 100% FALSE.
It looks great for a while but while it does at the same time it is working to ruin the matte finish.
That is a MAJOR reason I made this thread.

DO NOT use wax it if you want your matte finish to last. PERIOD.

That article is about Matte Paint not Matte Vinyl.
