What are dealerships paying these days for trades?

What do you all think?
Accept $2000-2500
or sell it on my own?
I have no place to "park" it though.
I'm wondering how long it will sit and I will be in a position to want to sell it fast so I might not even get what I want in a private sale.
I'm wondering if I could get $3500-4000 in a private sale. For $1500+ it might be worth it.
Best thing for me to do is actually go through the process and see what they actually will do instead of speculate :P
Thanks all

All you can do is go to the dealer and see what they offer. Just don't take their first offer which will be a low ball offer. I usually go back and forth like 3 or 4 times. Back in 07 I traded my 00 eclipse gt for $5k they offered me 3500 at first. Never hurts to keep asking for more and walk away if the deal sucks. But watch out that they don't charge you MSRP or over if they give you what you want on your car. Dealers are all about making money. Good luck.

Thanks Dawg
I know what I will I pay for my Stang. I will NOT budge from that, but I do understand that my trade isn't near as valuable to the dealer and I have to leave some wiggle room.
If a dealer gives me the price on the Stang I want I might loosen my *** cheeks on the price of my trade.
Btw, Nice looking ride there Dawg....those rims are sick!!

Yes, try to negotiate the best possible deal for the Mustang you want(don't even mention the car you wish to trade in). Make the deal on the Mustang as if you're getting just $1000 for your Cougar(for sake of saving yourself grief with the dealer). You need to go into the deal knowing exactly what you want to pay and don't use your Cougar as a piece of equity on your behalf. Once you get the deal you want, then the Cougar becomes a sweetener to the deal on the backend, makes sense?

My experience has been that the dealer will offer about 50% of what the wholesale book value is. I've gotten to the point that I don't even bother with trade ins. My last "trade in" went to my son as a graduation gift. Otherwise, I sell private party. If you have it priced well, they go pretty fast. There's a good market out there for used inexpensive cars in good shape. I think yours would qualify at your price points.

I think you need to stick to your guns. Be ready to walk out. Tell the dealer, Im here to close a deal on a car right now, but if you don't give me the deal I want I walk. That's worked for me every single time except on the 2013 Shelby. In the end, I got a much better deal on an very lightly used 07 Shelby.
Heck...one time they actually gave me the trade back after the deal was inked cuz they didnt even see value wholesaling it! rofl!!!
