I got this cabin air filter on ebay and it fits perfect and looks exactly like the original. Only $9.99 total and delivered 3 days after I ordered it!

I really can't believe there is a difference in which way you flip it when installing when new.
This thread had me thinking that if the replacement cost less than $10 I'd do it. Ehhhh...I'm good.

I'm looking at the original filter that was removed from my car. I don't know which way the arrow was facing. The side to which the arrow is pointing is much dirtier than the other side. I would think the reverse is the way it should be. Do you think the factory installed it backwards? Or is my thinking backwards?

The assembly line worker more than likely installed it backwards...

Does the new filter actually say "Air Flow" next to the arrow or is it just an arrow?

The original Ford filter from the factory says "Air Flow." I don't know what the replacement Motorcraft FP-53 filter says. While I'm curious, I'm not curious enough to remove it from my car. I'm on the side of those who say that it doesn't matter for that filter. There are doubtless some filters where it makes a difference, but this doesn't seem to be one of them.

Yep, might be a slight extra restriction of airflow, but not enough to even notice. If I got it backwards for whatever reason I certainly wouldn't bother again. Its going to filter either way..

Default Cabin Air Filter Direction

Ok, I have 2005, 80K miles, never changed the cabin filter. Bought the STP cabin filter from autozone and tried installing today. Here is the deal. The factory filter shows the arrows pointing TOWARDS the Cabin. As others have stated, this is obviously the correct direction of air flow. The issue is this. The original filter has flanges on it that hold it into position. On the replacement STP filter, the flanges are on the opposite side, Basically the replacement filters are being fabricated to go in the Opposite direction. I confirmed this by just checking at 3 different stores and looking at 3 different brands. All have the flanges opposite side of the existing filter. If I were to ignore the arrows and install to match the existing filter, then the arrow would be pointed TOWARDS the front bumper. With a new filter, I don't think this matters because it is just a paper filter. I believe that the direction of the flanges that hold the filter in place are more important than trying to match the direction arrow of the existing. That being said, if you already have it one way, DO NOT reverse it unless it is new. Because now you are blowing all the contaminants into the cabin. I can't believe no one else has noticed this...
