Default Hurst Shifter Looseness

My new to me 2009 GT has a Hurst shifter which is working fine. However there is at least a half an inch play in the the front to back direction before any mechanical parts are engaged. Is this typical of the transmission or could the shifter be worn? There is very little side to side slack. Throws are very short once the slack is taken up.

I'd say to check the handle bolts. Pop up the shifter boot and feel in the rubber boot where the handle is mounted. Wiggle it around to see if it's loose. Mine came loose a few times before I got some thread locker on it.

Loctite everything. Might not hurt to check the bolts underneath as well.

This happened to me when I first installed mine. It was the two Allen bolts on the actual shifter. Locktite then fixed

Wow, you guys were right on it. Two minutes to fix, plus fifteen minutes to get the D**n boot back on and presto a really really short shifter. Now I have to learn to shift all over again. Thanks so much.
