Little arrow in the dash?

Little arrow in the dash?
So I've noticed it before, but on my 2005 GT, on the tach just above center, there is a little arrow that lights up... but it never has. You can see it when the sun is going down and the light hits the dash just right...
Then, today I pulled my cluster to replace the stepper motors, and there is an LED right behind that arrow. But again, it never lights up.
Back in the '80's my friend had a Honda CRX that had a little arrow just like this, and it would light up when you were supposed to shift. It was an indicator of when to shift for best fuel economy. Does anyone know what the purpose of it is in the Mustang? Is it a requirement in another country?
No big deal, just curious.

When I look in my OM, the only instrument cluster arrow I see other than the turn signals is a symbol for the air filter and it has an arrow depicting air flow. But I've never seen mine lit.

The owner's manual states that it is for economy shift points just as you had surmised.
This is in the 13 manual that I have, but I assume that the information is the same. For the record though - I have never seen that light up and on the 2013 gauge cluster, it doesn't even look like there is a place for it.

It is a shift light that is non-functional in GTs. They are functional in other models (Don't remember, 500s? Roushs maybe? 500s weren't made til 07, but maybe they knew two years before that the cluster would need an arrow for a shift light?) They used the same clusters in whatever model had working shift lights and GT's, but there is NO way to make our lights functional. It's been discussed here before.

It is active in the GT500. I occasionally see it out of the corner of my eye and it can be adjusted for different shift points for RPM's too. I rarely even see it out of the corner of my eye so it's not annoying at least to me.
