Of courselocal mechanic will rape you, he doesn't know **** about mustangs from that model year, and after $1700 in repairs he would still say it is something else.

Stuff like this you either attempt yourself, ask a forum member who has done it and see if they would od it for you at a more reasonable price, or bite the bullet and let the Stealership take care of it.

Ford really needs to step up on these things. Stuff like this shouldn't go haywire in a car with less than 100K and if it is a known issue it should be a recall IMHO, it be a safety problem in that one could argue I am afraid to drive my car as I can't trust the instrumentation.

Just my 0.02

I observed couple of things though.
1. It doesn't do high idling at signals.
2. when engine is off. RPM sits at 3000

So I am thinking 4500 is normal if it starts at 3000.
The mechanic does not know Mustangs, therefore he has no clue and is not worth the time or money to have him look at your car. Most performance shops or Ford dealerships will know more about common Mustang TSB issues.

With your observation, it is most likely just a bad stepper motor and nothing to worry about. Did you try disconnecting your negative battery for 30+ minutes? This may reset it from being stuck at the 3,000 RPM mark.

I am not worried about my RPM and temperature gauges acting up. I don't even pay attention to them anymore. I focus on the speedometer and gas gauges, which are the most important to me. LOL

Cool. I wouldn't worry too much about the gauge. ;-)
