Sounds like another rod bearing issue, save for yours actually let go.
Tell 'em to replace the engine. I wouldn't say it's "common" but it IS going around on a LOT of 5.0's. Usually starts after a not-so-careful dealer does an oil change and doesn't add enough; from the info that I've collected.

I've read a lot of posts from people data logging their 5.0's and seeing a lot of knock sensor activity.

my cousin is a mechanic and he said it sounded like the rod bearings also. is this something that can be replaced? also what oil would you reccomend i put in after this disaster happened. i also live in new jersey and its pretty cold in the winter time.

If I owned a new 5.0? I'd probably have opted for the track pack and be running castrol 5w40 spt. That's the one that meets all the Euro car specs. That way ford can't try to void my warranty for running a thicker than recommended oil.
For what it's worth, I believe Ford specs 5w50 for gt500's and track pack cars, because they don't make a 5w40. Same reason Harley Davidson specs a 20w50 for my motorcycle.
