Is it worth anything to insulate the intake tube?

Default Is it worth anything to insulate the intake tube?

Maybe a weird question, but I was thinking about this the other day. I have a C&L Racer which has the plastic intake tube, but after some driving it's almost too hot to touch. Would there be any benefit to wrapping the part of the tube (and meter housing) that are in the engine bay with some foil-faced insulation to keep some of the heat out? I've done this on other vehicles but wasn't sure if it made a difference on this one.

No. First of all, the "Cold" in CAI is a misnomer as the intake air is still a bit warmer than you'd suspect. Secondly, even insulated, the tube will still pick up and hold a good bit of heat and the insulation would likely keep it hotter due to the heat transfer from the TB. And even IF it did cool it a bit, the gain would be within the % error of the dyno and you'd be hard pressed to even notice it.

A CAI is really little more than a velocity stack with a high volume air filter stuck on the end of it. The volume of air going through the intake is so much, that I really doubt it that there is really that much heat transfer into the intake charge on a N/A set up. It simply does not have enough time to pick up that much heat.

As far as increasing performance goes, you'd be better off making the heads run cooler by changing your fan settings. Some tuners change them, but some do not.

OK, I figured that was probably the case...
