2009 gt sound system upgrade
I'm looking to upgrade my sound system from the shaker 500. My budget is around $1200. For head unit I'm looking at alpine cda-117 or kenwood excelon x996. I would like to replace the 2 door speakers and 2 rear speakers for now as well.
Will the stock door subwoofers work with an aftermarket HU? Will I be able to hook up the existing siriusxm to the aftermarket HU that is siriusxm ready?
Any suggestions for a good HU and speakers? (prefer single din) Also might get the shelby kicker subwoofer, would those work off the HU without an amp?
Do you think getting an amp is a good idea?

If I had the shaker, I'd just pull it all out and sell it. Aftermarket puts it to shame easily. You can also put in a fairly inexpensive set of Kicker 8" subs in the door and run it off the rear channels of a 4 channel amp with the low-pass set appropriately.
My car didn't have the Shaker, so I just got the Pioneer DEH-80PRS, I highly suggest over the two you are looking at it if you're looking for a no-nonsense single DIN with Bluetooth, and it has Burr-Brown processors; which are basically audiophile processors. Holy crap it sounds great! It also has a mic so the unit can run a test and automatically adjust itself for your car's acoustics. Crutchfield is selling them for $300 right now and that comes with all installation accessories. Took me literally 30 minutes to install; including running the bluetooth mic up to the headliner near the top of the windshield.
My speaker set-up is Type-R 6.5 components in the front door ran off a 40Wx4 Alpine amp (forgot the model) bridged.
No speakers in rear shelf, I like a proper sound stage.
Type-R 12" in 1 cu. ft. sealed box in trunk ran off a 2004 model M1000 Alpine digital amp.
I'm all about sound quality, not bumping around and my setup is pretty amazing. But it's loud enough to be painful to the ears if turned up. The trunk once had two Type-R 12s but find that is too much bass for a car this size, too much box, and it caused everything to rattle.
All this was around $1200 and I installed it all myself. The harness from the car to the HU only uses two wires for power and one for ground, bypassing all other wiring in the factory harness since the speakers are powered by amps. Of course there's all the other wiring for the amps to deal with but it's really not that hard to do.
Appologize for being so long winded! Hope that gives you an idea of what you can do and have for around $1200.

Ordered the Alpine CDE-HD138BT since it had the features I was looking for: good sound, usb input, siriusxm ready, hd radio, plus blutooth and pandora. Also ordered 4 JL Audio C2-570x speakers, siriusxm SXV200v1 tuner since the factory sirius tuner doesn't work with aftermarket HU apparently, door panel clip removal tool, 4 speaker harnesses, 2 foam baffles, and a mastersheet from crutchfield.
No amp or subwoofers for now. Total cost about $510

It will be a huge upgrade. I didnt do any amps or subs either and what a difference it is from the stock crap. I did mine 2.5 years ago which is prolly ancient stuff now....LOL.... went with a Pioneer head unit with bluetooth, video touchscreen blah blah.....some kicker rears and Bostons in the doors. HUGE improvement. Crutchfield gives you all the stuff to make the install simple.
