That ain't good...

A little backstory:

I parked in the grass for a fraternity event on Friday. I don't know how it happened, but when I got in the car and started to move, I heard a really loud popping/grinding noise. I thought my front bumper was caught on something so I got out and looked, but I was in the clear. I drove home and the noise wouldn't go away. I got out of my car and now that I was on level pavement I could see the problem. My left front fender is sitting pretty much on the wheel itself. My car's low, but not that low.

I know I've obviously busted something (either a shock or strut?). All I need to know is if it's okay for me to make a short drive to the mechanic. I really don't want to have it towed but is that what's necessary in this situation?

How short of a drive are you talking about? Have you been able to look behind the rim at all to see whats going on?

I'm 3.8 miles from the repair shop...I probably put ten on it after I broke it because I didn't know how bad it was and I had to get home from the event.

I can't get behind the rim to look at it.

Never seen anything like that.... Maybe the spring somehow came off the strut?

I was about to say, "Killer drop" but damn, that doesn't sound good at all. 4 miles doesn't sound like alot but, with the way it looks, I'd get it towed. Most insurances will reimburse you the tow fee, no use risking any more damage (If there is any at all). Hope it's a simple fix.

Jack up your car, take the wheel off, and take a look! I wouldn't move the car until I did that. You got lucky to make it 10 miles, but 1 more mile could seriously damage something. Let us know what you find, show pics.

Assuming it's a blown strut, does anyone have any suggestions for a replacement? Should I replace just one? The front two? All four? I'm gonna go aftermarket if I have to replace more than one.

Good thing you only have stock ones which might explain it could be blown. I would go ahead and replace them all. If you want a better stock replacement go with the Koni SRT.Ts they aren't that expensive and are a nice upgrade from the stock ones. They are the ones I run.
