18" wheel and tire combinations
im sure many of you have dealt with threads like this before, but im going to ask anyway. i have a 2005 mustang gt that is currently sitting on 20's which im not particularly fond of. id like to move towards a more classic muscle car look and drop down to 18's, the only problem is im not sure what to run for tires on the front. i plan on buying a staggered set of black bullet wheels in 18x9 and 18x10 with 295 45r 18's on the back. i thought about 255 45r 18's for the front but i think its a little too much sidewall, and 255 35r 18's might not have enough. maybe some of you running a similar setup could post some pictures to give me a better idea of what i want to do?
are 295 45r 18's the biggest tire i can fit in the rear? i like how tall the 295 45r 18's are but wasnt sure if i could go up to 305's without rubbing.
the car is not lowered, but i have plans to do so in the future.
thank you for any help,
ryan

Max tire width depends on the wheel width. I know that my 9.5" wide 18's will take 285 as the recommended max.
As 05mustang suggested, 255's front and 285's rear are a superb combo. I wouldn't go wider than 255's up front due to tramlining. My 275's all around are horrid for tramlining due to those 275's up front..
Not only am I, also, not a fan of 20's, but when my '07 with it's 18" wheels sits next to my wife's '06 with 17" wheels, I wish that I had gone 17's. The tallest sidewall that I can run without increasing the tire O.D. too much is a 45 and that's just too skinny a sidewall to match the retro look that these S197's were based upon.

My setup...
18x9 255/45/18
18x10 295/45/18
First pic is pre-drop on a stock suspension.
The second, after a 1" all around drop using frpp p springs.
Personally I don't think you would want to go smaller up front with the 255/35/18 as there is already an 1.5 inch difference between the 255/45 and the 295/45. To answer you other question, yea you can go bigger than the 295/45. Even with the 1 inch drop, I had room to spare on the rear and have seen guys stuff a 305/45/18 on the rear with stock suspension and no rubbing problems...hope this helps.

thank you for all your help. i wasnt too sure on the 255 45 up front, but it looks perfect! i think im going to stick with the 295 45 in the rear. its mainly a dd and i dont think 305's for the street.

I currently have my car lowered with H&R supersports 1.9 rear drop. which is .9 inch more than you. Do you think you had enough room to spare to go .9 lower on your drop?
The reason I ask Is i want to do 295/45/18 Nitto NT05 tires. I have 18x9's and I am positive that 295 will be ok as I have 285 right now and nittos run narrower anyway. I have very little if any bulge, and there is a SVT guy running around with 315's on a 17x9 with no issues so i figured that 295 would be easy.
Any thoughts?

I had to google tramlining... I've always called this "slot car-ing"... My 255's do it bad.. the more worn they become, the worse they are at it..

If you're lowered but not by enough to have bothered with re-aligning it, you may also have a little toe-out, which is inherently somewhat "twitchy". A double dose of twitchy will keep you busy . . .
