40,000 miles/year on a Mustang?
 

Hi!

I know that a Japanese 4 cylinders would be a better choice, but I don't want a car like that.

However, from your experience how practical is a Mustang if you have to do at least 40,000 miles per year (most in highways)?

And does the V6 or V8 have any specific advantages (e.g., one being more reliable than the other)?

All highway..shouldn't be a problem..but that's a lot of miles! V8 is effortless on the highway and gets decent gas mileage (I've gotten up to 28mpg on a trip). V6 will get better mileage for sure and probably the better choice.

just make sure to change your oil before 40k miles

40k per year is just crazy! What do you do that you need to drive that much? If this is your commute, then you'd save more by moving than driving and just imagine how much more time you'd have to do other things.

I would definitely get the v6, but quite honestly I'd get a prius or other gas sipper, because the amount you'd save in gas would pay for the damn car.

I finally feel confident in domestic vehicles to say that you MIGHT be good for about 5 years/200k miles on the engine but I'm still iffy on the body, suspension, interior and accessories. I'm on Toyota #6 and the 1st 5 were sold at or over 200k miles only because I wanted something newer and not for ANY mechanical issues. Take that for WIW.

These mustangs are great highway cars. You'll be getting decent gas milage (on a newer v6 at least) and these cars are just great overall freeway cars. They sit at a good rpm when you're cruising at say 65-80mph.

I put a lot of miles on my car with a 90 mile commute, plus going out to see clients. Last year I put 32,000 miles on my car. It has held up well, including drag racing the 3.7 V6 on the weekends.

My last Mustang was a 4.0 with the Xcharger on it and I put 203,000 miles on that car and it was still running 12's at the track when I sold it. Pretty much trouble free miles.

Although I am probably going to pick up a Focus with gas prices going up to save some miles on the Mustang and some money at the pump as well.

Life is too short to drive something you don't like. A prius or any most any hybrid for that matter is going to get better mileage then a mustang. That isn't to say mustangs are terrible on gas but they are made to have fun in. A prius is something you get when you voted for Obama and come with a mandatory Hope decal. They are soulless vehicles that basically shout out douche bag when you drive them. This is pretty much what most who choose that vehicle in my experience are like.
