Question S197 Convertible Top Replacement...

Has anyone had to replace the top on their (05 or newer) Convertible? I am about to begin.. and would be thrilled to here of any potential pitfalls BEFORE I dive into this project.

I can not seem to find a "How To" for this.

This guy sells dvd's showing you how. Might get one myself when my sister needs a new top. You'll have to scroll down to find the one for 05-12 Stangs.

For $25 it might be worth having the DVD.... I was hoping to avoid any unnecessary costs. Trying to find someone who has already done a Top Replacement.

I have looked on Youtube and (other than aoksales) not a lot there. Have any of us DIYers done this?

Thank god mine is still in great shape, but I replaced my previous car's (Miata) top twice.
Once, I did it with a friend's help and during that ordeal I learned that it was WELL WORTH having a pro do it for me.

It is a very difficult and precise thing to do if you want it to look and work right.
I think the labor was only about $150 over the cost of the top itself.
Talk to your local guys and see how much they want if you bring the top.

The Miata top is much smaller and simpler (manual) than the Mustang's power top so I can only imagine it would be much more difficult to do.
No way I will do it myself when the time comes.

On another note, why the hell has Ford never come out with a removable hard top for our 'verts?

I thought about doing it on my 2005 but the idea of destroying it if one thing is off led me to my local top shop. I ordered a GT500 cloth top and it looks awesome! Much higher quality than the stock vinyl and a little quieter. Can't remember the install price but I think it was $3-400. Went to the only local shop that does them and they're used by the local Ford stealership.

I picked a new one up locally from a shop for a steal so now I just gotta find someone in Denver to install it. The wife's vert top is looking a little worn and dirty.

Yeah, cloth is the only way to go. Not sure if the Cali Special came with one or previous owner did it, but mine is very nice.
Once I replaced the craptastic plastic one on the Miata with cloth, I was a convert. No comparison, quality-wise.
