Long time ago ..... 1971 Pontiac GTO, was buddy's car, and I was with him one day when he took it to local Pontiac dealer for service and to install snow tires. We watched from the customer lounge as mechanic wheeled floor jack under center of rear to remove rear wheels and do tire swap, then he took it to drive on lift to do the oil change, etc . Later after we left, buddy noticed that it started puddling under rear axle on carport and so we back it up on some wooden ramps and then my buddy found leak at point where one axle tube entered center section. Then upon closer look, it looked like axle was bowed up in center, so we checked both tubes with a level ..... yep, it was bowed.
Few days later the same dealer installed whole new rear housing complete with guts, my buddy even got a choice of ratios as I recall.
I never have jacked one from center of rear because of that.

Not sure what you mean, but it was a mighty nice car back in the day ..... that was about 1972 or 73, and it's rear axle was put together pretty much like that 8.8 under the Mustang.
A '71 GTO is still pretty desirable ..... so I guess it did stand that test.

I've done a couple axle jobs and hate em because the gear oil smell. If I were going to do aftermarket I would have stuck with Strange or Moser. So what if the bearings aren't installed? You take an hour to drop them off at your local Napa who probably has a machine shop and can press the bearings on for you right. I've also done junkyard axles and differentials and again, just take it to the machine shop and get the bearings replaced and it's a lot cheaper. The good thing about these cars is that I'll bet that axle is the same one from F150, etc...and across many years so you can probably find one pretty easy and super cheap.
Im going to add too that I will never do axles and pumpkins again. Its a crappy job that I don't like so I'd rather pay "The Guy" to do it. I'm getting too old for that kinda work.

I got the Alloys installed two days ago, no problems so far. Nothing really feels different but didn't expect it to. Feels good to have a rolling car, just wish it didn't cost me over half a grand to achieve. The junkyard was my first option, but I just didn't have the time or transportation to junkyard hop. Was charged for three hours of labor, with panhard bar swap came out to $230 (talked him down fifty bucks) Axles were like $280.
