My father made a good point right after my collision November 8th. Even though the accident was clearly the other party's responsibility, he made it clear to me that a video would definitely prove innocence on any doubts.

He has some 720p digital (and possible nightvision) cameras.

The one problem I see of this, is that is uses a suction cup to hold onto the windshield. He then forces the small power cord in the small spaces on the interior until it feeds into the power jack in the center console. This idea is just unnerving, especially the ring the suction cup leaves behind and the occupation of the one useful power jack in the car.

Does anyone have any ideas for a rear view mirror mounted camera and or a way to get power to the camera without routing a cable through my car's interior?

A few of my friends have this model, and I have read some really good reviews on them.

As for getting power to it, you can splice off the hotwire for the dome lights, or you can wire to the fuse box. If you want a plug and play, you can chase wire all the way to your console and use the port there, or just drop the cord straight down to you dash port.

Your rear view mirror is not designed to hold up any weight besides the mirror, so I'd avoid doing it. Once the rear view mount comes off, sorry but the glue/etc at the auto parts store will never make it right again. It works for a while but eventually, you will be looking for your mirror again on the floor. Not saying it WILL fall off, but it can with added weight of a camera. If you want power, it should be possible to tap 12v from the light in the overhead console. In essence, your dad is right that hard wire is the way to go. If it's done right, you won't see the power cable at all.

Personally, I have a couple of gopros and batteries that I can swap in and out. Its been a good solution for me and I see the suction cups as a necessary evil.

look for a low light lipstick CCD and solid state DVR and mount it in the grille near the pony...no wires in the cockpit. Some of the solid state DVRs take a SD card which makes downloading video a snap. Most DVRs come with proprietary software that includes a time stamp. (admissible in court)

Sorry I just saw this thread. Here is a guy that has a camera mounted on the front window and also the rear window. Really good set up it looks like, and he posted some video of it in action. I am going to look into it myself.

Wow that looks really legit. I've been looking into dashcams for awhile now and just from the video he put up I think this one has been the best so far.

The problem with dashcams is that there's no "dashcam brand" or reliable source to buy them from. It's pretty much just this giant free market where people can sell whatever crap they want at whatever price they want. It's be nice if GoPro came out with one. Wait, no one take that idea.
