2014 V6 6-speed loose shifter
So some backstory - I'm currently in the process of repairing a salvage 2014 Mustang I bought with minor front end damage.
Aside from the crash damage it's in perfect shape except I've encountered an unexpected and frustrating issue with the shifter.
The car came without a shift ****, so I bought a new one (ball style) with shift boot retainer... The first problem? The threads on the shifter itself must have somehow gotten damaged because the boot retainer will not thread all the way and it is now STUCK. I've tried everything to get it off - many tools etc - searched on this forum and tried the tricks that were recommended there too. No luck.
Now for the secondary problem - while trying to get this boot retainer off, the shifter itself is now loose and and be turned clockwise/counter-clockwise. >
I've attached a picture below (not my photo - found on Google) of the part that is rotating.
Unfortunately this piece has to be rotated / screwed on just right or else the Reverse Lockout does not work properly and you can get into reverse anytime without pushing down on the shifter.
So my question is two prong:
1) Assuming I can somehow get that boot retainer off - how can I tighten the shifter so that it won't rotate anymore?
2) Since my threads are screwed, is it possible to replace just that cylinder / rod with the threading on it, or would any replacement involve replacing the ENTIRE shifter?
Thanks so much guys.
I was always very active on this forum when I get an 07 Mustang back in 2007... Been away from the mustang scene for a while and now very excited about this 2014 project car

The shifter spins where the shift **** goes on? If so, your going to have to replace it entirely. I ordered a shift **** from American Muscle for my 2014 GT 6-speed and it didn't fit, and messed up the threads. I chased the threads with a nut, but the nut got stuck, so I put some more torque on it with a wrench, and then I ended up with a spinning shifter. There are two plastic tabs down in the shifter that index it and keep it from spinning like that, and I broke them off when I put torque on the nut. To fix it, I ordered a shirt throw shifter and just did away with the broken one.
ETA:
This is the shifter I put in mine; you can see what all it replaces:
