Thanks for the thoughts. I'm waiting for the Ford dealership to get back to me about price for a new donut or tire, which I likely will get to be safe, as I plan to keep this car around a lot longer. I'm curious if checking wear of the clutch plates is something they do with their regular inspections every 5k miles, or only at larger mileage intervals, or only if something fails?

I doubt they check that. No way are the going to open up the pumpkin (and change the fluid at $xx.xx per quart on their nickel), and I doubt that checking one wheel for "breakaway torque" would be a good enough indication to be worth the trouble.

The way most people discover that LSD plates are worn is when they start having only the right rear tire spin on a hard launch or too easily when turning a hard right from a full stop. I'm not at all sure how wear on a Torsen type of differential can be gauged, other than by driving and observing.

Were you able to get a new donut tire? I think the size you need for the 17" wheel is T185/60R17, part number 9003089397.

From what I have been able to find out, this part has been discontinued. If anyone knows where to get such a tire (new, not sitting around for years), please let me know. Thanks.

i got the tire on eBay, then had the dealership install it on my existing donut/rim.

Why are you guys overthinking this? The spare tire in my mustang is a 185/17R60 tire, you should be able to get one of those from any tire shop, plus you should be able to get it speed rated.
I agree that the limiting factor is both the tire age and the speed/load rating. Get a real tire on the spare rim.

I can't even find 185/60-17's online just to find out if it has the same load index as a T185/60-17 tire. I have my doubts regarding load capacity, as T-spares are typically inflated to much higher pressures than normal road tires (which are either SL or XL).

1010tires won't even try to search for that size, doesn't list 17" diameter once you've entered 185 for width and 60 for profile.
