Like many others have said, summer tires are horrible in the winter time. I have summer tires on my car, and it's parked when the weather is cold. On the rare occasion that I take it out when the temps are below 50 the traction is horrible.

You either need a second set of winter tires, or a single set of all season tires. All season tires will not grip as good as summer tires when the weather is warm though.

That's a nice luxury to have.

Even people like me (3 cars, 2 drivers) may have no choice when one of the other two cars needs work done on it (like my "spare" car does right now). Yes, it is pretty easy for me to get my now-ancient Goodyear Asymmetrics to spin or slide a bit, so I just drive easier than I otherwise might. In case you're wondering, the OE all-seasons are worse in the wet than the GY's are in the cold. No lie.


I guess I should give OP a little credit for at least noticing his traction difficulties . . . but I have to take more than a few points back for not recognizing that some of his driving habits need to be temporarily revised. You can't be so unwilling to be inconvenienced - in this case, forced out of the way he normally drives - that you ignore your own responsibility here. When it comes down to a battle between physics and what an individual wants, physics will win every time.

Get yourself an inexpensive set of Wheels and fit them with dedicated Winter tires. This way you don't have to keep breaking the bead on a seasonal tire swap to only one set of wheels. Then get some good quality summer performance tires For you main set of wheels.

I want to change my tires from 245/45/19 to a 18 any suggestions on what size to look at? I want to try to keep the height the same or as close as possible would like to go a little wider in the rear but the same in front.

Shelby sizes- 255/45-18 front, 285/40-18 rear.

Thats the perfect size tire for 18s on a 9 and 10 inch wheel. AM has some tire kits that you can look at and see the sizing for each sized wheel.

You could pick up some used stock wheels and just mount some decent winter tires. That would be the cheapest route and be able to drive your car safely in the winter.
