Well, the God says the 7th day is the sabbath...should have been close on Saturday!
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

, Jesus would have been born around 4 AD (or as it is known now, C.E.). Such a HUGE event like the birth of the prophesied savior in the world's dominant religion warranted the tracking of time, to be able to relate everything that is and everything that was to that one moment.
So 2009 years ago was ROUGHLY when Christ was born. Since then, errors in human calculation of how long it really takes for the sun to go 100% around the sun and the complex nature of society have led to the developments of several different calendar systems. We are currently using the Gregorian calendar, based off the Julian calendar, devised right after the birth of Christ. Switching between these calendars at large and the discrepancies (number of days in a year, etc) has led to being off slightly from the initial, year 1 start date after the birth of Christ.
Keep in mind that not everyone uses our Gregorian calendar: many Muslims use the Islamic calendar, which takes its roots from the beginnings of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, only a couple hundred years after Jesus. They are not in year 2009.
