Default The good, the bad and the ugly

I retired last year after 30 years of service to the Commonwealth so I thought I would treat myself to something nice. I scoured autotrader, Carfax, carmax.carguru among others and located a 2014 Shelby GT 500 at Bridgewater Acura in NJ. Made an appointment and went to see it last Thur. To say it was cherry is an understatement. One original owner, only 1125 miles on her. Oxford white with blue stripes. The previous owner still had the original window sticker attached to the window. Took it for a little test drive. She was sweet indeed. Traded in my 2011 GT premium and signed the paperwork. Before leaving the sales manage took me on a tour of their storage facility where they keep other really nice Mustangs, Corvetts,Camaros, etc for sale. That was the good. The bad happened about 20 minutes later as I was cruising down I-78E when I noticed the car seemed to lag ever so slightly when hitting the gas. Then the lag became more noticeable and I started to notice a burning smell and saw some white smoke in the mirror. I pulled into the BDL and called roadside assistance. Bridgewater Acura had the car towed to Fullerton Ford. The sales manage was waiting with a loaner Acura TSX. He was aghast and couldn't apologize enough. The ugly was the drive home. I must have hit every construction site on the way home. Traffic was horrendous. I got a call from the manager the next morning. The ford dealer is working on the car and it's definitely the clutch. I will know more after the holiday . After it's fixed the dealership has offered to have it delivered to me on a flatbed.

Hope this ends better than it's starting, for your sake.
Stock ?
Did you speak to the previous owner before the sale ?

Thanks. The sales manager called me today stating Ford is replacing the clutch. Should be ready in a couple of days. He's also going to try to find what they think happened. I just don't think the previous owner abused it. The car is completely stock. I get the impression he bought it primarily as an investment. All the Ford issued window stickers were still attached. Heck, even the owners manual zippered case still had a protective film covering the SVT emblem.

It could simply be the prior owner didn't know how to drive a stick. I see lots of people who are riding the clutch, slipping it like mad trying to get started, and other abuse from not being able to drive a stick well.

Well that sucks it has that issue. Seems like the dealer is providing good service though.

I have a buddy that had a GT-500. In the couple of years he had it he put several clutches in it. He finally sold it. Is this a problem with the 5?

Apparently the stock clutch in the GT500 can indeed be problematic and many owners eventually upgrade to an aftermarket unit.

Investment? Hilarious. Read that one online where the old dude bought a 2011 GT500 new kept it in bubble wrap and died, then someone picked up a new GT500 for pennies on the dollar. Ford amde as many GT500s as there was demand for, so, it'll be decades, if ever before that turns a profit.

The car is meant to be driven and I think the protracted sit time may have hung something up here. At least Ford is making it right, because the clutch only has a 12 month warranty on it.

No worries there. It won't be a garage queen in my household. I subscribe to the Jay Leno school of car philosophy. Cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed.
