Exclamation Advice on a Failed clutch last night

2007 Mustang:

A week ago I felt my clutch not engaging or changing gears, had to attempt multiple times to change gear.
Last night it failed completely, I was on the freeway switching to 4th gear and it just gave out. I rode the car out to the exit, the transmission fluid was smelling bad. I had it towed to home.

On Monday I am getting it towed to a shop.
I wanted your guy's advice on what questions to ask the mechanic and what to look out for so I don't get dinged with a ridiculous bill.
The guy towing the car told me I can change the blutch myself and that its easy (i doubt that). But I dont want to pay more than I need to if I can make sure the actual problem is addressed.

Thanks again, Great forum here!

What mods are on the car, mileage etc. I don't you'll you were smelling transmission fluid. If you were, it's not your clutch.

No mods, 105K, couple months ago had the water-pump housing replaced. The clutch pedal has no tension. If you attempt to start, it's just lurches forward hard and dies; I assume it's not actually in neutral and actually in a gear when trying to turn over.

Thanks for the help and advice!

Sounds like either the clutch master cylinder or the slave cylinder has bit the dust and there's no hydraulic pressure to disengage the clutch plate.
Obviously the tranny is still in gear when you're trying to crank the engine so shift it into neutral while the engine's still off before you crank it again.

The battery is dead now, I will have to attempt that at the shop.
What parts should be replaced?

With 105k miles most likely all clutch related parts.

Probably just the throw out bearing/slave cylinder. I think I paid $450 five years ago to get mine replaced.
