Default Timing chain replacement cost?

My wife's 2005 GT has some timing chain noise, my mechanic said he thought due to guide wear. He estimated labor at $1500 which seem pretty bad. What have you guys paid. If I had someone tear into it I would do new guides, chains, tensioners and water pump.

It does seem high considering an entire engine swap labor for me was $2500... but the space in front is limited and it's going to take the better part of a day just to get the timing cover off (removing most of the accessory units onteh serpentine belt) and then the better part of a day to close it all up.

I would have them replace the oil pump gears while the cover is off also.

Did you put in a crate engine or remanufactured engine? After going to the ford dealer this afternoon and seeing the price of new stangs the $1500 sounds good lol. I made the mistake of showing my wife the $60k Shelby cobra in the showroom, dear Lord.

For what it's worth, the job would probably be easier with the engine out altogether. You could then use the opportunity to replace the water pump, oil pump gears, coolant hoses, clutch assembly, and even install a pair of headers.

It was a built engine from MMR. The labor for swapping the long block out was $2500, the actual engine was significantly more.

Well its either gonna get fixed or get pulled out and replaced with a 5.0 Coyote 4v motor with 435hp. I can get one for $7400 with the manual trans harness and flywheel, so maybe $9000-$9500 installed. I'll want to check with a mechanic before buying as I'm not entire sure that engine is comparable.

It really depends on how long my wife wants to keep the car. She loves the 2005 body style, much more than the newer ones. She was actually thinking of driving it for another 2 years to see what the new Broncos look like. In that case I'd just get this motor fixed. If she wants to drive it for another 5-10 years then we may go with a crate motor.

What's funny is I drive a Mazda CX-5 and she drive the Mustang and is looking at Broncos lol. We're a bit of an opposite couple.
