Oil Needed
Good afternoon, I have a 2009 gtcs cv and wanted to know if I really needed to use the ford motorcraft oil as stated on manual. I have not been using it since I got the car a year ago. Only what ever brand of synthetic blend used at place I use to change my old. Is it a really big difference or pretty much the same???

I don't use synthetic blends, just synthetic. Whatever the oil fill cap says, weight wise,
I use in Castro Edge. So, my V6 says 5W30, so I use Edge, If the Magnatec is available,
I use that. Usually, something is on sale at Walmart in 5W30, synthetic... Mobile 1,
Edge, is what I use mostly.

As long as the oil you are using meets the Ford Spec in the manual, you can use what ever you want.... That being said, I used Castrol full synthetic too (5w-30). Slightly higher than the 5W-20 recommended by Ford because of the higher year-round average temps here in the Phoenix, AZ area.

That's what I figured, when I get her she was not really making any noise. Now its a diff matter and I was suspicious that when I went to semi blend it started to knock just a little. I will be going to a full blend and see how that works out. Thanks for all the info, very helpful.

Several years ago I searched synthetic blend vs full synthetic motor oil. 'Synthetic blend' motor oil can have as little as a half an ounce of synthetic mixed in the bottle of regular motor oil, and still be sold as 'synthetic blend'. I thought it would be 50% regular oil mixed with 50% synthetic, I was wrong

Obviously Ford is going to pitch their Motorcraft oil, but it's actually pretty good stuff.
I used the 5W20 Motorcraft blend for about the first 12,000 miles (bought my '08 new), then switched to Motorcraft in 5W30 full-synthetic. A little extra protection at high rpms (particularly on the occasional track day) far outweighs any desire for gaining a small fraction of a mpg in street driving. Somebody who was once very close to the modular engine program made it clear that he wouldn't ever run 5W20 in them.
