Default Hurst shifter with t-handle: go retro!

Had one of these babies in my '69 Roadrunner. Took about 1.5 hours to install (tight quarters, even with the clearance under my neighbor's lift) and a friend's 2nd pair of hands. Notchier than the stock shifter but goes in with a definitive clunk. Don't have to hunt around for 3rd or reverse. Nice short throw.

Cool. I jsut watched a show on Speed about Hurst. Pretty cool but those were some ugly looking cars e.g. Hurst Olds (Holy crap did that look like a suped up pimp mobile, I guess to get the 'hoes to the corner faster)

Those few remaining Hurst Olds are rarities though. I'd love to have one of those pimpers now!

Looks good. What site did you buy it from and how much did it cost?

Not bad. I think my shifter alone was $186.

Yeah, here are a few tips.

First, give yourself as MUCH space underneath as you can. The install doesn't require dropping the drive shaft, which is RIGHT in the way, but you want some room. My neighbor has a low lift in his left garage bay, giving me a solid 2ft underneath. I tried using Rhino ramps and jack stands, but it didn't feel like enough room. I'm 5'10" and 170 lbs.

Second, while you can do this on your own, a second pair of hands is really helpful. Doing the 4 bolts is a piece of cake but manuvering the shifter in and out with someone in the cabin really helps. The hole you have to work with is SMALL.

Third, the old shifter comes out by the long end, and the new one goes in by the long end (towards the front). While going in, you actually rotate the whole assembly about 45 degrees. You'll see what I mean.

Fourth, while the instructions don't tell you to, I took off the console cover (two bolts inside the armrest). It gave us a LITTLE more room to work with.

Finally, the absolute worst part was getting the rubber dust boot back on. It's very tight working space and...we'll, again, you'll see.

Love the feel.

John

Thanks. I've been driving the '04 the past couple days since it's been raining and itching to take "The Boss" to and from work. I SOOO miss driving it!!
