Default Mustang + Snow = certain death

So the wife and I went to see harry potter tonight. We went at 7pm and there was no snow falling at all. We get out of potter and there is 3 inches on the ground. Since we are in germany, weather forecasts are virtually non-existant, also this is a quite hilly area and the germans, I believe, dont own any snow plows! The drive home needless to say was pure hell! We almost got stuck twice, once we couldnt get up a hill until the guy behind us got out of his car so that he and I could push the car while the wife drove. German roads are angled due to the fact people drive like maniac's so I spent half my drive home going sideways. To top it all off, the wife had NEVER driven in the snow! The closest she came is when we were driving cross country and it started snowing.. she freaked, woke me up and said I am driving!

Next year I may need to get a beater car for the winter months.

I had the same experience in the Boston area with my 1985 GT. The answer is a set of steel rims, narrow all-season tires, and about 100 pounds of lead shot in the spare tire well. You'll be able to go anywhere.

Maybe a limited slip differential would help, too.

I think every mustang GT since at least as early as '84 has come standard with a ltd slip differential.

I also have a V-6 Mustang and I live in Michigan. Because im 16 I can't just buy a junker for the winter, and although the mustang is diffinetly not the best winter car, it's not the worst either. I just added 100 pounds of sand bags to the trunk for 2 reasons, 1) the extra weight and 2) in the worst case scenario, break the bag, place on the snow and it helps with grip. My suggestion is just go to a parking lot (with no light poles ) when it snows really hard, and practice getting used to the car in snow. If possible get someone to go into the passenger seat, and when ur moving, have them grab the wheel and turn it in a random direction to simulate (as cheaply as possible ) a patch of ice and then practice correcting the turn. Hopefully that helps.

i thought the 05 were suppose to be alot better in the snow ? i've driven a 99 once and it wasn't that bad.

i drove an 88 2.3 for a whole winter when i was 18, i got through it ok but i have to say never again. got a ZX3 for daily driving now, great little car, the stang stays in the garage even when it's just raining.

invest in some decent snow tires and cheap wheels. goodyear ultragrip ice, or bridgestone blizzaks
