Start up noise?

Start up noise?
I posted this in the 4.6 specific forum, but am hoping for any further info...I can't duplicate the problem at the dealer as the engine is warm when I get there...
If the engine is cold and it's the first start of the day I get a low end minor tapping/clattering noise after about 20-30 seconds. Lasts for about a minute and then diminishes. Doesn't do it on restart if warm. Sounds like an old bad lifter type noise, but softer and definately on the bottom end of engine. Can hear it more from under passenger frt wheel well. Buddy of mine is a motorhead from way back and thought a rod knock or piston slap. Car just turned 4k mi.
Anyone else experience this or have an idea of what it is?

RE: Start up noise?
A lot of the mustangs do it. What happens is on a cold start, the car is idleing lower and choking for gas. I bet after about 60-90 seconds, the car self revs to about 1.5K rpms and then settles back around 900 rpms and is fine. Mine does it all the time on start-up even if it's not cold. Nothing to worry about.
Edit: If it doesn't self rev and settle after about 60-90 seconds, then it is something else and should be checked out. If it does, don't worry about it and wait for that self rev before you take off or the car will bog on you for a minute or two before it catches up.

RE: Start up noise?
Have a 4 liter and it sounds the same as you described at first when it's below freezing on first start, live in NY, then goes away after about 2 - 3 min. Figured it's just the way the motors are.

RE: Start up noise?
Thanks guys, it is an early 05, but is an Automatic.
CK- NO problem w/the start-up fast idle and it doesn't quite do that. At ignition, revs run right to about 1400, then starts to settle down from there ( Not too cold here, in other climates, would take longer I'm sure) It's when the engine has been running for about 30 secs it starts. Goes away after about 2-3 mins. I've been around a lot of cars/noises in my life too, but this is wierd because it stops. If it continued, I'd be sure it was a rod or piston... Thanks
