Glass Roof Retrofit
#11
I love my glass roof but half the time the shade doesn't roll back. It won't roll back when it is cold outside. I honestly could do without it but I love that I got it for the looks.

My understanding it that the roof panel is completely different on glass roof cars. When the car is bucked a different roof panel is welded on. It is not just a hole cut in it like a CDC glass roof.
A while back I was looking at retrofitting a Glass Roof into my 2010. I found a a wrecked car with class roof. Salvage yard said they would cut roof at A and C pillars and I could have had the entire thing for $250. That included Glass, headliner and shade.
A competent bodyshop would have then had to cut the original roof off at the A and C pillars and weld/graft the glass roof in ... I figure it would have cost maybe just a little more than the $1995 option when new.
I ended up taking the simpler route .. ordered a new car with the Glass Roof.

Before I bought my car, I called a local sunroof installer. They quoted me sunroof prices (starting at $1300) and the glass roof install for $3500! They said it'd take a week to do the glass roof since it's major surgery.

oh nice! Do you happen to remember the name of the shop?

I believe it was Texas Autotops of Austin. A "spoiler" type sunroof was $1200. Still thinkin' about that one. $3500 for the glass is way out of what I'd spend. It's only a $2000 option.
