I think that the s197, with manual shift, the armrest should have been rethought.
Has anyone come up with a mod for this area?

I sold these mustangs for three years and I too despise the center arm rest. I finally found one I'm gonna buy so its not a deal killer. I just don't like the way my forearm makes it pop open.
Only problem I ever have with the center console is explaining to passengers why they can't set their Big Gulp, or any other drink in my cup holders. "Hold it or dump it out, I won't be inconvenienced by your thirst. I usually leave my cup holder cup open and put my wallet and/or cell phone in there.
I have no complains other than when I have a cup in the cupholders. What I hate is the car shifting from 1st to 4th. It feels like a punch in the gut since I expect the car to move at the speed/throttle of 2nd gear.
I also agree, the armrest in these cars isn't brilliant at all, but if anyone is buying this car purely for the interior I think you might have the wrong car,
I have a small metal L bracket wedged in the hinged side of the cupholder cover. Wrapped it with masking tape so it doesn't scratch anything. The cover locks shut with the bracket in there.
