2011 Mustang - 3.7 Liter info
 

I will be trading in my 04 2v GT and ordering a new 3.7 Mustang, Im really excited and all I can do is look up info and rebuild one on the actually Ford site over and over again. I just wanted to make a thread with all the links and info I have scoped out. 2011 3.7 V6 Problems? Hesitation on Acceleration
 

I drove a 2011 V6 (new 3.7 liter engine) my dealer has on the lot. When stepping on it (either from a stop or going about 35 mph) the engine hesitated before accelerating. The lag in accelleration was quite annoying. The employees at the dealership also noticed the hesitation when they drove it. I currently have a 2008 V6 and it does not have that problem (old 4.0 liter engine). I have a friend with a Pontiac G6 GTP (about 260 hp) and it really takes off, unlike the 2011 V6 Mustang (with 305 hp). In a 0 to 60 with my watch (not a stop watch), it appeared to be about 6.5 seconds (almost 1.5 seconds slower than Motor Trend’s test).

None of the reviews talk about this problem. Has anyone else driven a 2011 V6? What have you noticed? I am hoping this is an isolated case to this one car as we were planning on trading our 2008 convertible on a 2011 convertible.

I test drove it and never experienced that problem. The car hauled ass and is probably faster than my car.

I test drove the 3.7 with both auto' and 6 sp, I experienced no hesitation. The car was really quick and responsive.

Glad to hear that nobody else has seen this problem. I'll have to find another one to drive.

I'm no rocket scientist but I think a wrist watch isn't the correct way to judge a 0-60.

2011 V6 Acceleration
 

You are correct, a watch is not very accurate, and I was very clear that it was done with a wrist watch not a stop watch to let people know it was not very accurate.

I have had to opportunity to drive another 2011 Mustang V6 Automatic and it runs the same. So, I had a couple “professionals” drive it (I am not). We can up with the following conclusions:

1. Peak horsepower of 305 is obtained at 6500 rpm. Red line is 7000 rpm. It takes a while to get to 6500 rpm, so it is not as fast off the line as one might expect for 305 hp. Mustang offers a 3.31 for better off-the-line performance, but it is not available on the convertible. (The two we drove did NOT have this option) Anybody know why it is not available on the convertible?

2. The transmission is hesitant to downshift when one needs the high RPM for more horsepower to accelerate. Manually down shifting helps this A LOT. Dropping to 2nd gear at 60 MPH to accelerate on the highway works a lot better than flooring it and takes a lot less gas. Hopefully Ford will get enough complaints about this that they will release a software update to correct it.

The 2011 Mustang is much nicer than the 2008 we currently have (for many reasons), but the acceleration is still a bit of a disappointment. It appears that Ford focused hard, very hard, on getting over 30 MPH and over 300 hp a milestone never before done, and may have sacrificed performance to obtain these numbers.

We get 27 mpg highway on our 2008 Mustang Convertible that has an EPA of 24 mpg. Wonder what we could get out of a 2011 with and EPA of 31 mpg.

Any other suggestions on how to improve acceleration would be helpful.

Get a manual and get aftermarket 3:73. :)

These new cars also need to be broken in with some miles before they start performing better which im realzing on my new 2011 as well. But i must say it definatly pulls harder then my 2v when it was mildly modded.
